In the fast-paced world of logistics and supply chain management, adaptability is key. For BR International, a leading end-to-end supply chain provider, this truth became starkly apparent as they embarked on an ambitious expansion of their warehousing operations. What began as a leap forward in capacity soon revealed the limitations of their existing systems, setting the stage for a transformative partnership with WIN Solutions and their DC Metrics product.

The Challenge: Overcoming the Limits of Legacy Systems in a Rapidly Expanding Warehouse Environment

BR International had always prided itself on its comprehensive service offering, covering everything from customs clearance and freight forwarding to warehousing and transportation. However, as Chief Executive Officer Kevin Jamieson explains, their rapid growth exposed critical weaknesses: “We had aggressively expanded our warehousing, our 3PL warehousing offering, and we had expanded our footprint from 7,000 square metres to 70,000 square metres.”

This tenfold increase in warehouse space should have heralded a new era of efficiency and capability for BR International. Instead, it brought to light the inadequacies of their legacy warehouse management system. “We were running a legacy warehouse management system that had various limitations,” Jamieson recalls. “It was good in our previous environment, but it wasn’t scalable and we were basically ringing the neck of that product.”

The consequences of this mismatch between ambition and infrastructure were far-reaching. Real-time data visibility became a luxury rather than a standard. Transparency, a cornerstone of customer trust in the logistics industry, was compromised. The team found themselves increasingly reliant on manual interventions and Excel spreadsheets to bridge the gaps in their system’s capabilities. Perhaps most critically, their ability to manage multiple customers efficiently within a single warehouse—a key competitive advantage in the 3PL sector—was severely hampered.

These challenges came to a head during the COVID-19 pandemic when the closure of brick-and-mortar stores led to an unprecedented surge in e-commerce demand. “It really exposed the weaknesses of our legacy system at that stage,” Jamieson notes, highlighting how the crisis acted as a catalyst for change.

A Seamless Transition to Modern Warehouse Management with DC Metrics

Recognising the urgent need for a more robust, scalable solution, BR International embarked on a comprehensive search. They developed a meticulous checklist of requirements, drawing insights from their current strengths and weaknesses, industry benchmarks, competitor offerings, and evolving customer expectations. The ideal solution, they determined, needed to be cloud-based, offer regular and seamless updates, provide real-time data visibility, and seamlessly manage multi-customer warehouse operations.

It was during this search that BR International discovered WIN Solutions and their DC Metrics product. “We learned about DC metrics when we were struggling with our productivity and we called James Gardiner to discuss that because of his experience with regard to the warehouse offering,” Jamieson recounts. DC Metrics promised to address their key challenges head-on, offering comprehensive productivity tracking, real-time visibility of stock and operations, and tools to identify inefficiencies in warehouse setup and processes.

Overcoming Implementation Hurdles: A Partnership Approach

However, the prospect of implementing a new system across their expanded operations was daunting. “There were massive reservations for the introduction of DC metrics or anything else into the business because the implementation of those things can often be unwieldy,” Jamieson admits. The fear of disruption, coupled with concerns about staff adoption and potential impacts on ongoing operations, created significant hesitation.

It was here that WIN Solutions truly set themselves apart. Their approach to implementation was characterised by a deep commitment to stakeholder engagement and a nuanced understanding of change management. “The approach that WIN Solutions takes is always very personal, and that sets them apart. They are very much like our organisation—a can-do attitude, let’s get it done, let’s involve our people,” Jamieson says.

Enhanced Productivity, Efficiency, and Employee Engagement

The impact of implementing DC Metrics was immediate and significant. “We had a lift in productivity pretty much straight away,” Kevin stated. The introduction of DC Metrics not only improved the relationship between labour spend and revenue generated but also created a self-sustaining feedback loop that continually enhanced productivity. Over the years, BR International has seen consistent improvements in efficiency, with each incremental gain contributing to the company’s bottom line. “An extra point here, an extra point there—it all throws more money on the bottom line and allows us to stay sharp,” Kevin added.

Perhaps most surprisingly, the system has fostered a culture of continuous improvement and engagement among staff. “Staff now take ownership of the improvements,” Jamieson observes. “They work hard to identify it. They now feel that they have a voice and they have a contribution to make in terms of doing more with less, which is what we’re all about.” This sense of empowerment has been instrumental in driving the company’s success, as it aligns with BR International’s philosophy of doing more with less.

This enhanced efficiency and accuracy have translated directly into improved customer service and a stronger competitive position. “It’s allowed us to be competitive and to win more business for sure,” Jamieson states. The success has been so profound that BR International is now working closely with WIN Solutions to further integrate DC Metrics into their new WMS, creating a seamless, fully integrated system that supports all aspects of their warehouse operations. As Kevin concluded, “DC Metrics has become an integral part of what we do, and I just can’t imagine life without it again.”

A Partnership for Success

Reflecting on their journey, Jamieson offers this advice to other businesses facing similar challenges: “There are some great products out there on the marketplace and there are some great providers that help you with those products. The thing that I did right was pick a product and a provider that was at its heart, something that recognises that you need to encourage all of your staff to come on board in the change management project.”

BR International’s experience with DC Metrics stands as a testament to the transformative power of the right technology solution, implemented with care and foresight. It’s a story of how addressing operational challenges head-on can not only solve immediate problems but also unlock new levels of efficiency, staff engagement, and competitive advantage. In the ever-evolving world of logistics and supply chain management, it’s a powerful reminder that the right tools, coupled with the right approach, can turn even the most daunting challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.
